Duluth, Minnesota trio Low defined a genre (the clunkily named 'slo-core') with their sweetly minimalist and lusciously mournful songs, which feature drummer Mimi Parker's divine, doomed-angel voice. The opening lines of their eight LP -- 'All the soldiers/They're all gonna die/All the little babies/They're all gonna die' -- suggest taht they haven't lightened up any, but it suits them well. Experimenting with loops, drones and textured electronics, they tackle political subjects with both outraged anger and a dignified intelligence.
