This trio from Duluth, Minnesota, are best know for their initial agenda: playing as slowly and quietly as they possibly could. The conventional wisdom was that, two albums ago, they decided they had taken minimalism as far as they could: on Trust and The Great Destroyer, things got both faster and louder. How wrong we all were. Those two albums now look like a mere sonic sorbet before Drums and Guns, on which the band strips everything down to music that could be comfortably contained on a four-track recorder. Breaker feature a cheap electronic hand-clap machine, a simple organ line and those extraordinary voices. My, how minimal they are. All the better to send shivers down your spin when a squalling guitar bursts into life. Drums and Guns is Low at their pure, distilled best. Every single note matters. Prepare yourself for a treat.
