Low: Destroyer
Stevie Chick
Though Low are best known for the churchly hush of their early records, the gradual emboldening of their sound since 2001's Things We Lost In The Fire well suits husband & wife song-writing team Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk. From the crunching Neil Young-esque guitar tones of On The Edge Of, to the faintly-psychedelic Haight/Ashbury wooziness of Silver Rider, The Great Destroyer preserves all that is great about this Duluth, Minnesota trio, while dragging them from the slo-core shadows and into greater view. These deftly written, expertly crafted songs never put a foot wrong, the frail organ motif and beautiful skewed harmonies of Cue The Strings the sweetest step yet in their ongoing quest for a most homely, folksy perfection. Somehow, Low's precious gift for understated subtlety has survived the cranking of their amps up to 11; indeed, it flourishes even better than before.
